Baud, Jean-pierre; Haure, Joel; Garnier, Jacqueline.
A bulk production of phytoplankton (Skelelonema costatum) has been obtained in concrete tanks from saline groundwater. This was used in various concentrations to feed an intensive cultivation of the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) in ponds. No difference was observed in growth rates of molluscs, with food concentrations between 31 to 126 µg/l Chl a. However, the growth rates obtained from March to November with a food supplement were 1.5 times higher than those observed in the traditional, extensive cultivation. The biomass doubled and the increase in flesh dry weight was 2.5 times higher. The condition index reached a value of 100 in the intensive cultivation. During growth, the proximate composition analysis revealed that the lipid and carbohydrate...

Factors that Influence the Production, Environment, and Welfare of Broiler Chicken: A Systematic Review Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Baracho,MS; Nääs,IA; Betin,PS; Moura,DJ.
ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to characterize the scientific production regarding the factors that influence broiler chicken production, and that were published from 2000 to 2015 in journals indexed in the database of Google Scholar, Scielo, and ScienceDirect. The research was done in the Thermal Comfort Laboratory at FEAGRI- UNICAMP, and the concept of the systematic review was applied. The research criterion was initially defined (the keywords) aiming to identify and evaluate the variables that describe the experimental characteristics and the animals. The primary keywords identified were: broiler chicken from commercial strains, broiler production, rearing conditions, thermal environment, air quality, acoustic environment, light...

Intensive culture of the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) in marine ponds. The impact of rearing densities and feeding levels on growth rates and yields ArchiMer
Baud, Jean-pierre; Haure, Joel; Bodoy, Alain.
Intensive ongrowing (from 28 mm to the commercial size, 35 mm) of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum was studied in experimental raceways with a natural bottom of clay. The factors controlled were rearing density (100, 200, and 300 individuals/m2) and food concentration (34.0 and 68.1 µg.1-1 chlorophyll a). Food was produced from a batch culture of Skeletonema costatum in a large volume (50 m3), thanks to the fertile ground and saline water. Best results regarding final size were obtained in the vicinity of the inflow with a densilY of 100 individuals/m2. However it was a density of 300 individuals/m2 which appeared from the following results to be the optimal choice for intensive rearing: the survival rate was 84 %, the final biomass was 4 kg/m2 and...

Ronzani Cerqueira, Vinicius.
Several sea bass-rearing experiments were performed from hatching trough metamorphosis. The rearing units employed were 500 1 polyester tanks, where flow rate and temperature of seawater, light and suitable food (rotifer and artemia) were controlled. Stock density ranged between 50 and 100 larvae per liter. Individuals held in tanks with internal black walls developed faster and had a greater survival rate than those in white tanks. This suggests that a better contrast between preys and background assists the larvae to see food organisms more clearly. The sea bass larvae search for food is based only in vision and not trought mechanoreceptors or chemoreceptors. It was very difficult to evaluate the light intensity (50-5000 lux) influence on feeding,...

Bensch, Alexis; Bacher, Cedric; Baud, Jean-pierre; Martin, Jean-louis.
The growth of Ruditapes philippinarum was modeled with an energetic budget equation. Clams were fed with Skeletonema costatum in experimental units during 6 months. The filtration and respiration terms of the budget were depending on the temperature and the dry weight. The spawning effort was represented by an allometric relation derived from the experimental data. The model simulated the individual growth of the dry weight and of the shell converted into energy during the 6 months of the experiment. The results fitted well with the observations until the loss of energy due to the spawning. After that period the model overestimated the growth which was explained by another spawning loss not taken into account in the model and not noticeable with the...
